Churp Churp Alpha – Fay Hokulani

   Category: Alphas, Malaysia |

A girl who inspires us her astonishing story of weight lost and her toned physique. Young, beautiful, witty and intelligent Fay Hokulani originates from Singapore and now rocks her hosting, acting and modeling career in Kuala Lumpur. Juggling her exciting career while keeping herself this fit definitely requires a lot of time and determination, so let’s have a look at what keeps her up and ready for everything life has to offer! Churp Churp presents our beautiful Alpha – Fay Hokulani!

On being a Host/Model/ Fitness Icon

How did you start your career in the entertainment industry?
My first big break was in TV hosting a show called ‘SCORE’, which aired in Singapore and Malaysia on the okto channel. It did pretty well so I hosted both seasons 1 and 2 with my co-host, Jibby, who is now based in LA. Then the next big step happened after I moved from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and got an awesome gig in February 2011 with hitz.fm as their Hollywood news reporter! Both were very fun jobs, in front of the camera and on radio, and I feel natural at them. I’m really blessed to have gotten that exposure to start in this industry because I truly love what I do.

You look great and we love your toned physique! Tell us your initial inspiration that drove you to work this hard for such figure? We know the first stage to get over laziness is one of the biggest challenge!
Motivation is the most important factor in getting fit and staying fit. When I was about 19 years old I gained a lot of weight and wasn’t happy with how I felt or looked. Just before I started getting into fitness, I was given this book called ‘Body For Life’. I found a lot of the stories from the individuals who signed up for the ‘BFL’ nutrition and exercise program to be very inspiring, which was what got me started on my fitness journey – it is a journey, and takes a lot of reminding about why you got started to stay disciplined as it is very personal for every individual. Now fitness is an essential part of my lifestyle, but I still find bouts of extra motivation mostly though listening to new music and reading fitness publications. I share a lot of my favorite workout tracks on my blog withlovefay.com and Facebook Fan Page, along with routines and exercise tips to motivate others. In a way, it helps me be even more motivated too.

Let’s say you’re having a very hectic working week filled with shows or shoots, what is your ‘must do in-between-work-workout’ that you can’t possibly miss despite the tight schedule?
Going without breakfast makes me very grumpy. I always make time for breakfast; it’s the most important meal of the day so it’s good to start with something healthy and full of complex carbohydrates like a bowl of wholegrain cereal or oats with blueberries. But if I’m rushing out the door, I make sure I take at least an apple or a non-sugary protein bar with me.

I’m your biggest fan, what can I do to grab your attention?
Those who’ve read my blog often say they find it to be very motivating and a few were even inspired to start exercising and eating healthily. The ones who really grab my attention are the people who share their sincere and personal journeys of success. It’s nice to know that I’ve been a positive influence for some of my fans and that’s a big part of why I’m doing what I do.

What is your biggest accomplishment?
Being on the cover of a fitness magazine! I’ve done covers for men’s magazines before but to be on the cover of Shape (Malaysia) is a personal accomplishment that I definitely worked hard for, you could say all the way back to when I was 19.

What do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not at the gym, I like to spend my time trying out different sports activities. I really enjoy surfing, kickboxing, and archery. I do like to relax sometimes too though believe it or not, so an evening on the couch in front of a good DVD goes a long way to my recovery.

Favourite type of Music?
I love listening to hiphop or dance when I’m at gym. Anything by Rihanna, Lil Wayne or Kanye West gets me going. I’m also a big fan of high energy party mixes by guys like DJ Bento and SmithAgentSmith. but I do have a soft spot for rock bands like Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182.

What’s your favourite sport and why do you love it?
In-line skating! It was the first sport I picked up when I just about 7 years old and I learned it all on my own. At that age, for the first time, I felt a great sense of accomplishment and independence.

Do you have pets? If yes, tell us their names!
I’m not ready to make that commitment yet as I’m always traveling. But I’ve always wanted a pug, so I bought this stuffed toy and named him Yoda. He travels with me sometimes.

What are your favourite foods?
I could eat authentic Thai food everyday, with chilli peppers sprinkled on top of everything! In fact, I love anything with chili pepper. Except dessert, of course.

What is your idea of a perfect getaway?
An island retreat or a spontaneous roadtrip. There are so many places in Malaysia where you can do that which is part of why I love living here.

Any interesting hobbies you’d like to share with us?
I could spend hours on the internet looking for new music from my favorite artists, bands or DJs. I think that counts as a hobby!

What kind of character of the opposite sex that you find appealing?
A gentleman with a great sense of humor and positive attitude. Yes, I am referring to someone in particular 😉

What is your favourite fashion style?
Classic military style when casual. Bold with a touch of feminine.

What is the best pick-up line that you’ve ever received?
Unless you’re Jim Carrey, pick-up lines are a bad idea because girls simply don’t like guys who try too hard or come off rude. A casual “Hi, how are you? My name’s ____.” usually works and if she’s interested, the conversation will naturally flow.

What about the cheesiest pick-up line that you’ve ever received?
The cheesy ones are the easiest to forget so I never paid much attention or remember any in particular to be honest! But one guy asked “Do you do karate?” at a kickboxing event so I naturally said “No, why?” To which he replied “Wow! Cuz your body is kickin’!” Lame!

If you could wish for anything from a Genie, what would it be?
The ability to pick up any skill just by watching a demo or other people doing it. Unfortunately, in the real world, there are no shortcuts and you have to work hard to get the best out of what you do.

Prometheus – Sneak Preview

   Category: Malaysia |

Howdy Churpers! Guess what, the director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner”; Ridley Scott, returns for his third creation of the genre of his expertise. Allow us to introduce you…the PROMETHEUS! This time around, Scott created a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. Without any clue to what they’re facing, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. The thing is…with who? We’ll let that imagination of yours roam for the moment!

Here’s a little teaser; check out the trailer of this upcoming blockbuster!

The captain of the Prometheus; Janek, is starred by the award winning Idris Elba. In this avant garder film, his primary mission is to protect Prometheus and it’s crew. Idris Elba is perhaps best known to audiences for his stunning work as Russell “Stringer” Bell on HBO’s television drama THE WIRE. The British actor played the role over the show’s critically-acclaimed five seasons.

Elba’s work in television and film began in the early 90s and includes roles in films such as BUFFALO SOLDIERS, 28 WEEKS LATER, ROCKNROLLA and THE LOSERS. More recently, he has appeared in Marvel comic adaptations including Kenneth Branagh’s well-received THOR and alongside Nicolas Cage in GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE.
Before being cast in PROMETHEUS, Elba worked with Ridley Scott on the Oscar-nominated AMERICAN GANGSTER. In PROMETHEUS, Elba plays Captain Janek, and he shares his thoughts on the role from the film’s Pinewood Studios set.

Even having worked with Ridley before, was it exciting to get a call that he wanted to do another ALIEN movie?
Idris Elba (IE): Definitely. I love working with Ridley and his return to a genre that everyone wants to see him in is exciting. It feels really great to be a part of it.
How did he describe it to you?
He called me and said he’d like me to get involved in the film and he sent me the script. We got on the phone and talked about what his ideas were for the character and it was really pretty straightforward. He was definitely really excited and pumped about doing this film, and I could tell that.

Was it still an ALIEN prequel then?
IE: The word ALIEN never came up, and it hasn’t really. The only time he’s ever sort of compared it was just in terms of describing that the DNA of the ALIEN film is definitely imprinted in this film. That was evident from the script, but we didn’t really talk about that film at all. That’s been done, but this is something different. That was his point of view, that we were doing something different.

Ridley’s made two of the most important sci-fi films of all time. Is there an added sense of responsibility on your part, on top of just working with Ridley, to help him deliver a third?
IE: There’s always a responsibility to make sure you show up and make sure that the character you’re playing is completely brought to life. I don’t think you can take responsibility in terms of the hierarchy of film. Maybe for him, perhaps, but I doubt even that. Looking at it that way is much more for the people who enjoy the films than the people that make them. Our responsibility is to make a good film and be as artistic and as courageous as you can be. And Ridley’s certainly one of the most courageous filmmakers ever. We know that from his history. But he never lets it dictate what he does next, and it doesn’t inform us as actors about what we do. But I definitely feel the fans are expecting a lot, and I want to please the fans, I don’t want to let them down. But I never want to let them down, no matter what I do.

Janek seems to be a little quieter than some of the crew. What did you make of him?
IE: He is an engineer. He works on these huge vessels that do long-haul space trips. He’s the captain of Prometheus and there isn’t much to him. He’s like a longshoreman. There’s no real mystery with him, I don’t think, and why would there be? His job is pretty straightforward. He has a character and personality that will reveal itself in the film. But his purpose on that ship is to fly it and to get it from point A to point B. He’s not really involved in the politics that ensues in the film.

So he’s there for the paycheque?
IE: There’s an interest because what happens on that ship affects everyone on it, but yeah essentially his job is to get everyone there. It’s a mission and he’s basically the eyes of that vehicle. Things happen that do affect everybody in one way or another and as the man that has to deal with the ship, he has certain responsibilities to uphold and fulfil. I had a fantastic time playing him and it didn’t need to be complex, but it was so enjoyable. It’s neither a big part nor a small part, it’s just a great part. It’s a part that I think plays a very important role in the film.

Did you find yourself engaging with the film’s themes?
IE: I guess we all, somehow in our head, wonder who would we become or what would we do if our very existence as human beings were to be challenged. How would we deal with that? That’s definitely part of the DNA of all Ridley’s films. He looks at human existence and how we cope and extreme and sometimes bizarre situations. I think with this film it’s no different. For me, it’s definitely an examination of what Captain Janek has to go through, where his morals lie and what he should do. I’ve never flown a spaceship, and never even been on board of one, but during this experience I got to really understand that if I were out there in that world, flying around in a machine, and something as extreme as what happens to these people were to occur, what I would do. It’s really fascinating and engaging for me as an actor. I guess the writers really had a great time exploring those possibilities and I had a great time playing them.

Does it add an extra layer to have that personal interest in those notions?
IE: I guess Ridley likes to work with actors and rely on their instincts, regardless of what’s on the page. He really feeds off instinct, and his take on most actors he enjoys watching is different. What that does is it allows him in the edit room to continue creating. Everyone’s different and everyone’s different every single day. Today I’m looking for a parking spot, I’ve finally found one and I’ve got no coins on me. I’m not that pissed off, but on any other day I might be really angry about that. That’s two different takes right there. In the edit suite, every director’s dream is that he can still create his story and build.

The sets are incredible – stepping onto that bridge set, it can’t have been hard to play a space captain.
IE: Definitely. It makes it easy to bring ourselves to life. Every detail is taken care of and so much of it worked. I couldn’t fly a spaceship to save my life, but because of the detail involved I’m sat there in front of this console that actually works. You press this button and something happens, that button and something else happens… And the thing about Ridley is he knows everything about the ship. He’s designed it in his head and that’s what makes him so special.

Churp Churp Alpha – Adam C

   Category: Alphas, Malaysia |

In this week’s feature, Churp Churp brings you a male icon that has been in the broadcasting and entertainment industry for years! He’s an established television host, living his passion in bringing us live updates on international football leagues. He was also a famous radio announcer in Malaysia. He is a busy man who travels all over the world for his shoots and shows but somehow managed to allocate some of his precious time with us here, in Churp Churp.

Without any need of further introduction, we present you Adam C! Adam Carruthers is down-to-earth, friendly and very knowledgeable! Let’s get to know him better in this exclusive interview session that we had with the man himself.

How did you start your career as a TV Personality?
I was 18 and on my gap year before I started uni. I spent my time working in a club, handling media relations and suddenly was urged to go for a casting with a newly formed TV station called “8tv”. I went in, 2 hours early because I was afraid of getting lost, and got interviewed/shot with my producer/future co-hosts Marion and Rina. They called me back the same day and that was that!

What are your other passions aside hosting?
Football! I spend most of time watching even though in Malaysia it can be at really terrible hours. I also love video games (mainly console games), comics/toys, technology, movies and tv shows.

I’m your biggest fan, what can I do to get your attention?
Wear a Spurs jersey! Or goalkeeping gloves (I play as a goalkeeper) or even a comic book t-shirt! Like Sheldon from “The Big Bang Theory”.

What is your biggest accomplishment?
Probably what I’m doing now. Growing up in England, I was obsessed with football and used it watch it all the time. For me to be working as a football TV host, holding discussions, hosting live games and even being sent to Wembley is a dream comes true.

What do you love doing aside from being in the entertainment industry?
In school I loved to act! Maybe again one day. Also, playing futsal and football, reading my comics, playing video games and sleeping. I do love to sleep.

Favourite type of Music?
I’m a weirdo, I’ll listen to anything. If you drove past a car with “The A-Team” theme song blasting, that was me. Literally, I’ll listen to anything. I think I’m drawn to the drum beat of the song more than anything.

What’s your favourite outdoor sport and why do you love it?
I do love most sports but hands-down its football. I’ve been able to turn a passion into a job at Astro Supersport. I went to boarding school in England when I was 8 years old, liking football before that and loving football after that. To this day, I still playing in 6-aside tournaments, futsal sessions and field football too.

Do you have pets?
Sadly no, although I do love animals!

What are your favourite foods?
In recent years, I’ve become more adventurous and learnt I take spicy food better than I thought! Banana leaf always rocks but I do keep going back to pasta….

What is your idea of a perfect getaway?
Hmm, I go through phases but right now, discovering a new city. I’ve also never been to America and would love to take a month travelling across!

Any interesting hobbies you’d like to share with us?
Apart from football, video games, comics, movies and tv shows, I’ve started collecting toys! There is this brand called “Hot Toys” who make amazing pieces so I try to look out for them. Even bought a glass cabinet at Ikea to house it all : D

Care to tell us a bit about a current crush if you have one now?
Nobody but my girlfriend : D

What kind of character of the opposite sex that you find appealing?
Somebody interesting, fun and likes to do things on the spur of the moment. oh, and can put up with my weird sense of humour, understand the basics of comics and is willing to have a go on my gaming console and of course, liking football!

What is the best pick-up line that you’ve ever received?
Never, that I’ve been aware of, received one!

What about the cheesiest pick-up line that you’ve ever received?
Ditto from the previous question : D

If you were a twitter hash-tag, what would it be?

Name us a personality that you are following on Twitter/ Facebook?
Hmm, the older brother from Malcom in the middle has tweeted me a few times. Oh and a really funny actor called Paul Scheer on Facebook (google him) replies my wall posts on facebook. Rio ferdinand tweeted me once too! So those are some of the ones I’m following.

Suggest us a must follow Twitter account and Facebook page, either than yourself of course.
Paul Scheer on facebook cause not many people follow him and he is funny. Samir Carruthers on twitter. Nope, not related but he is an upcoming star for Aston Villa who has a cool surname.

What do you usually look out for, on Facebook?

I’m gonna say football but I tend to tweet about random things I do.

Why do you think people follow you?
They feel sorry for me because I support Spurs.

Are you churpy in the mornings? If so, whats your secret? Mine is coffee but people tell me not to drink too much.

How does it feel like being a Churp Churp Alpha?
Its an honour and pleasure! I’ve got some good friends who are also “Alphas” too and it gives me a chance to meet new people in the process.

Is there anything you would like to shout out to your fans and members of the Churp Churp community?
Sorry I can’t meet each one of you individually, but looking forward to knowing you better, at least on Twitter or Facebook. Nothing better than making new friends and Churp Churp allows us all to do it! Also, if you don’t support a club, give Spurs a try.
